Parish Evangelism
Whati is parish evangelism? In the prayer our Lord gave to us, we say "Your Kindgom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." So often, we say these words without really thinking about what they mean. But what does it mean for God's Kingdom to come on earth, and what should be our attitude toward bringing it about?
Saint Paul tells us that we are the body of Christ and that we are ambassadors for his Kingdom. Jesus, in his great commission at the end of the Gospel of Matthew, told us to go out into all the world and make disciiples of all nations. We cannot rest comfortably in our favorite pew waiting for Christ to bring about God's Kingdom on earth! As Saint Teresa of Avila said so eloquently, "Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours."
Bringing about God's Kingdom on earth is the mission that Jesus gave us. And that is what is what parish evangelism is all about.
Here at Santo Niño, our parish evangelism program reflects the objectives laid out by the Archdiocese of San Antonio's Office Evangelism. To that end, we would like to share with you the vision laid out by Martha Fernández-Sardinia, director of the archdiocesan Office:
Duc in altum! Put out into the deep! Jesus instructed Peter and the first disciples to let down their nets for a catch. They obeyed despite their misgivings. An amazing catch followed that brought their fishing nets to the point of breaking!(Luke 5:4-6) Christ instructed, the disciples trusted - and they saw the miraculous. Are you ready for some fishing?!
In his Apostolic letter Novo millennio ineunte,, Pope John Paul II exhorted us in Christ’s name to put out into the deep. Have we set aside our doubts and set out into the deep? We may need to remind ourselves that at times we must do the “ridiculous” to see the miraculous. Not to fear! Yahweh yireh: the Lord will supply! He wishes to bring about a new springtime and wants to use us to get the job done. We must not delay; after all: evangelization is the “supreme duty of every baptized Christian.” (Redemptoris missio, On the permanent validity of the Church's missionary mandate: Pope John Paul II, 1990)
The aim of the Office for Evangelization is to assist individuals in following Christ as Lord and to equip individuals and groups for effective evangelization outreach. Through various services, we help Parish Evangelization Teams, catechists, faculty and staff of Catholic schools, youth and young adult ministers, seminarians, deacons and priests, leaders of movements and apostolates, parish staffs, parents, and Catholics in general become “everyday evangelized evangelizers” and become instrumental in helping their parishes, schools and apostolates become evermore “evangelized and evangelizing communities of faith.”
I hope you will find on this website useful resources that will enable you to become better equipped to live your faith fully and share the Faith freely with others. There are various needs and circumstances to take into account in order to be fruitful in our evangelistic endeavors. That is why we highlight a variety of approaches through which to be and bring Good News to others. The number of worthwhile methods continues to grow, providing us with a richness of resources to faithfully carry out our call to be effective evangelists, catechists, apologists and witnesses of the love and mercy and truth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
May the Holy Spirit anoint us with the grace to willingly undergo the ongoing conversion needed to effectively be and bring Good News! May the same Holy Spirit anoint every parish, school, ministry and program so that, as one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church we might produce a rich harvest for the Lord, as we carry out this “new evangelization: new in its ardor, methods and expression.(John Paul II: Haiti, 1983;Ecclesia in America, 1999)
